Description

AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

I had to read this book before the HBO Series premiered. It didn’t disappoint. Page turner after gripping page turner.

This was the first Gillian Flynn book I ever read and I have to say, I am hooked. The storyline, the writing style. It was all amazing. Flynn does an excellent job bringing you into the story. This is one book I wouldn’t mind reading again and again!

This book was good, but nowhere near as heart-stopping as Gone Girl. Perhaps that was the point? I loved the big twist/revelation at the end...did NOT see that one coming! I also loved that the main character was so realistically flawed. It made for an interesting ride!

Excellent read. Creepy & exciting. Couldn’t wait to find out who the culprit was - clever twist.
  • Pretentious, boring, predictable.

The writing is so tedious and amateur I found physically myself cringing every page or two. I also knew how it was going to end by page 34 when the author basically spells it out for you in bold letters. I also have to say: Flynn’s copious and irrelevant descriptions of young teenage girls’ body parts really bothered me in this. It took a turn for the bizarre when I realized they weren’t necessary at all for character development, plot, or gaining an understanding of how the narrator thinks—WHY would she be thinking that way literally any time she sees a young girl? They started to sound more like the author speaking and less like the narrator (Camille). You don’t need to describe a girl’s every body part, down to her “downy” “coltish” legs and what kind of bra she’s wearing, every time you introduce one into the scene or refer back to her. It borders on obsession, and made me embarrassed and uncomfortable for the author.
